ALWAYS BE THERE FOR YOU BEGAN WITH THE FLASHING LIGHTS, ELECTRONIC MELODIES AND OVERWHELMING NOISE OF TOKYO, BEFORE BECOMING A SONG ABOUT SOMETHING MUCH QUIETER: THE PERSON WHO IS SIMPLY ALWAYS THERE.
While travelling through Tokyo, I became fascinated by the tiny electronic melodies buried beneath the noise of its gaming halls. Back in the studio, those fragments became the starting point for something warmer, more emotional and unexpectedly personal.
FINDING MUSIC IN THE NOISE
ALWAYS BE THERE FOR YOU BEGAN WITH A SOUND I COULDN'T QUITE FORGET.
I've always been fascinated by sounds that weren't necessarily created to become music.
When I'm travelling, I'm constantly listening. Trains, pedestrian crossings, crowds, machinery, wind, voices and all the strange little sounds that give a place its identity.
Tokyo takes that to another level.
Walking into one of its gaming halls is complete sensory overload. Lights flash everywhere. Machines compete for your attention. Hundreds of electronic sounds and tiny melodies seem to be playing at once.
But underneath all that chaos, I heard something beautiful.
There were these little melodic fragments that kept sticking in my head. I didn't want to reproduce what I'd heard. When I returned to the studio, I started exploring the feeling of it instead.
Somewhere along the way, the song completely changed.
What began with the noise, repetition and flashing lights of Tokyo gradually became something warmer, emotional and surprisingly personal.
Always Be There For You became a song about the opposite of chaos.
Constancy. Connection. The person who remains when everything else changes.
That's one of the things I love most about making music. You can begin in one place and have absolutely no idea where the track is going to take you.
This one travelled from the flashing lights and noise of Tokyo to somewhere considerably quieter.
FROM CHAOS TO CONNECTION
SOMETIMES THE PLACE A SONG BEGINS HAS VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH WHERE IT ENDS.
Always Be There For You started with the sounds of Tokyo. The repetition, the electronic melodies, the movement and the strange little fragments of music buried beneath all that noise.
But once I returned to the studio, the track began to move somewhere else.
The machines disappeared. The flashing lights disappeared. What remained was something much simpler.
A song about being there.
About the people who stay when things get difficult. The ones you don't have to ask. The ones who are simply there.
Perhaps that's why the contrast feels right. Something that began in one of the loudest, most overwhelming places imaginable eventually became a song about reassurance, connection and constancy.
